FAQs

What Is Asbestos Awareness Training Certification?

Asbestos awareness training teaches workers how to operate safely around asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). You’ll learn the health effects and hazards of asbestos, then you’ll learn how to recognize ACMs, assess the risk of asbestos-related activities, apply control measures, and dispose of ACMs properly.

“Certification” is often used as shorthand for completing this training because you’ll earn a certificate of completion after passing the final exam. However, OSHA doesn’t recognize or encourage the use of the term.

What Is an Asbestos Awareness Certification Good For?

Asbestos awareness training helps anyone who may encounter asbestos in their work by arming them with the knowledge to recognize and assess the risks. This reduces the likelihood that workers will be exposed without realizing the serious health threats of asbestos-containing materials.

Can I Take the Asbestos Awareness Training Course Online?

Yes – OSHA allows for any compliance training to be offered online as long as the trainer is OSHA-authorized and students are able to correspond promptly with an instructor. Our online asbestos awareness training courses meet all these requirements.

Which OSHA Asbestos Training Course Do I Need (Construction or General)?

You should choose the asbestos awareness training that matches which “industry” your work is subject to.

If you perform construction, demolition, or renovation, you primarily follow the standards found under 29 CFR 1926, so you need the Construction version of the course.

If you perform any other kind of work, you primarily follow the standards in 29 CFR 1910, so you can take the General Industry version.

Is the Asbestos Awareness Training Course Hard?

Asbestos awareness training is designed to introduce workers to asbestos hazards and safety in a language and vocabulary that they can understand.

As you work through the material, you’ll take short quizzes to confirm your knowledge. These quizzes will help prepare you to pass the final exam.

How Long Does the Asbestos Training Course Take?

Most people can complete asbestos awareness training in about an hour. That said, our online courses allow you to work at your own pace.

Is Asbestos Awareness Training Required?

If there’s a possibility of being exposed to asbestos on the job, OSHA requires your employer to provide you with asbestos awareness training before you begin a related assignment and follow up with annual refresher training. Supervisors of these workers also need to meet the requirement, even if they’re not likely to experience personal exposure.

What Jobs Require an Asbestos Awareness Training Certification?

Anyone who works in construction probably needs asbestos awareness training, along with anyone else in a related field: electricians, plumbers, roofers, and more. Maintenance workers, decorators, and similar professions are also likely to need this training.

Anyone involved in asbestos inspection, abatement, and remediation will need a higher level of training. In many cases, they will also need specific credentials required by their state or local government.
