FAQs
How Many Levels of Confined Space Training Does OSHA Recognize?
When it comes to confined space training, OSHA doesn’t set up structured training programs for different levels the way they do for HAZWOPER. Instead, they simply require employers to train individuals working in or near a confined space with what they need to know to stay safe.
They do acknowledge four different roles that require different training: entrants, attendants, supervisors, and rescue personnel.
Does OSHA Require Annual Confined Space Training?
OSHA doesn’t specify a mandatory refresher period for confined space training.
The confined space standard only requires two things to happen on an annual basis. First, employers must review their permit program every year. Second, rescue operations need to be practiced at least once every 12 months.
Of course, these tasks can easily coincide with annual training, and it’s smart to repeat your confined space training on an annual basis to keep safety fresh on everyone’s minds.
Does This Course Satisfy Requirements for OSHA Confined Space Competent Person Training?
There are two Confined Space standards: one for General Industry and one for Construction.
The Construction confined space standard is the only one that references requirements for a “competent person.”
This course is for General Industry. However, we do offer a Construction version of the course that is appropriate for competent persons.
Should I Take Training for Construction or General Industry?
Generally, if you are doing any kind of construction work, such as building a new structure or reconfiguring a space, then you will more than likely need the Confined Space Entry Training for Construction. On the other hand, if you are refurbishing existing equipment, then you will probably need the Confined Space Entry Training for General Industry.
However, if you’re not sure which course to take, we recommend checking with your employer or state-regulations.
