DOT Hazmat: Basic General Awareness

Course Objectives

The objectives of the DOT General Awareness training course are to meet the Federal Department of Transportation training requirements of 49 CFR 172.704(a)(1) and 49 CFR Part 172 Subpart H.

Per 49 CFR 172.704(a)(1)

General awareness/familiarization training. Each hazmat employee shall be provided general awareness/familiarization training designed to provide familiarity with the requirements of this subchapter, and to enable the employee to recognize and identify hazardous materials consistent with the hazard communication standards of this subchapter.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Identify the basic hazmat hazard classes and divisions and understand their associated hazards;
  • Use the hazmat table to locate proper shipping names, identification numbers, hazard classes, packaging and labeling requirements, and more;
  • Complete shipping papers for hazardous materials;
  • Demonstrate the proper use of markings, labels, and placards; and
  • Describe the differences in packagings and which types of packagings are appropriate for specific hazardous materials.
