About This Course
This online course provides a practical foundation in MSHA Part 46 for surface mining. You’ll learn how to recognize common surface-mine hazards and apply basic controls, how MSHA standards help protect your health and safety, and what Part 46 expects of miners and mine operators. The course also explains miner rights and operator responsibilities for training and a safe work environment, and how these elements fit into an employer’s Part 46 training plan.
Part 46 requires 24 hours of New Miner training, with at least 4 hours completed before beginning work. Employers must also deliver site-specific, task-specific, and supervised on-the-job instruction under an approved training plan. This course delivers foundational content that can support an employer’s Part 46 plan and help learners prepare for the additional site and task training required by MSHA.
MSHA requires New Miner Training for anyone at a Part 46 surface mine who is “regularly exposed” to mine hazards, either for more than five consecutive days or on a frequent, recurring basis. If you are exposed to relevant hazards, you need training regardless of job title or duties.
Who Needs MSHA Part 46 New Miner & Newly Hired Experienced Miner Training?
This training is designed for new surface miners and newly hired experienced miners working at Part 46 surface mines. It’s also required for individuals working at surface mines who are regularly exposed to mining hazards, either for extended periods (more than five consecutive days) or on a frequent, recurring basis. If you're exposed to these hazards, training is required, no matter what your job responsibilities are.
