FAQs
What is NYC SST Training?
NYC SST stands for New York City Site Safety Training. It’s a safety training program for construction and demolition workers in the five boroughs that was established under NYC Local Law 196 of 2017.
When you complete SST Training, you’ll receive a durable plastic card in the mail that will serve as proof of training. This is referred to as an SST card. It’s valid for 5 years.
Who Needs an SST Card Under Local Law 196?
NYC’s Site Safety Training requirements apply to any job site with a Site Safety Plan or a designated Construction Superintendent, Site Safety Coordinator, or Site Safety Manager. These rules essentially apply to anything larger than a 3-family dwelling.
Most construction personnel will need a 40-hour Worker SST card, but certain job titles will require a 62-hour Supervisor SST card. This includes the Site Safety Manager, Site Safety Coordinator, Concrete Safety Manager, Construction Superintendent, and any Competent Person designated by the Construction Superintendent.
How Do I Get and Verify an SST Card in NYC?
NYC SST cards can only be issued by training providers approved by the NYC DOB (Department of Buildings), so you’ll need to ensure that you find a DOB-approved provider.
We’re a DOB-approved provider under our parent company (360training). Our Provider ID number is 4T02.
Next, you need to choose a course package that will give you the right level of training – a 40-hour Worker SST card for most construction/demolition personnel or a 62-hour Supervisor SST card for a few designated titles (see the previous question).
Once you’ve completed all required coursework and passed all quizzes and tests, your training provider will issue your SST card.
If you need to verify that someone’s SST card is valid, you can scan the QR code on the back of all cards issued by 360training. Alternatively, you can email us with the student’s name, SST card number and type, issuance date, and expiration date. We’ll get back to you within 3-5 business days.
Can I Get My NYC SST Card Online?
Yes, you can obtain your NYC Site Safety Training (SST) card online by completing the required training through an NYC Department of Buildings (DOB)-approved course provider like OSHA.com. After successfully finishing the necessary courses, the provider will verify your training and issue your SST card.
Which NYC SST Course Do I Need?
The specific SST course you need depends on your role:
- Workers: Must complete 40 hours of training to earn an SST Worker card. This can be done through an OSHA 10-Hour course plus additional training or an OSHA 30-Hour course with fewer additional courses.
- Supervisors: Required to complete 62 hours of training to obtain an SST Supervisor card, including the OSHA 30-Hour course and other specified training modules.
What is the Difference Between OSHA and SST Cards?
The main differences between OSHA and SST cards are:
- OSHA DOL Cards: Verifies the successful completion of nationally recognized training, like OSHA 10-Hour or OSHA 30-Hour, covering occupational safety and health topics.
- NYC SST Cards: Specifically required by NYC Local Law 196, SST cards include additional site-specific training beyond OSHA courses to address NYC construction hazards.
How Often Do I Have to Renew My SST Card?
SST cards expire every five years. To renew your SST card, you must complete refresher courses within 12 months before the card's expiration date. If your SST card expires, you must apply for a new one and retake the required training.
What Jobs Require a NYC SST Card?
A NYC SST card is required for New York City workers on job sites that require a Construction Superintendent, Site Safety Coordinator, or Site Safety Manager. These roles include:
- Construction and Demolition Workers
- Construction Superintendents
- Site Safety Coordinators
- Site Safety Managers
- Concrete Safety Managers
