Historically, falls are the leading cause of fatalities in construction, accounting for about one-third of all fatalities in the industry. For example, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported fatal falls to a lower level in private construction increased from 255 in 2011 to 370 in 2016, a 45-percent increase. The BLS also reported there were 338 fatal falls in construction in 2018, out of 1,008 total fatalities. OSHA recognizes that incidents involving falls are generally complex events, frequently involving a variety of factors. Consequently, the standard for fall protection deals with both the human and equipment-related issues in protecting workers from fall hazards. This training is intended to help workers and employers better understand the Fall Protection in Construction Standard’s requirements and the reasons behind them.

This required course can help fulfill the requirement for an individual applying for a New York City Site Safety Training Card. THIS IS AN AWARENESS-LEVEL TRAINING ONLY and does not provide any other qualification or authorization. Employers must train workers in the control of fall hazards associated with their tasks and the -proper use, limitations, and maintenance of fall-hazard controls. This includes how to use equipment such as personal fall arrest systems, retractable lifelines, vertical lifelines, scaffolds, and, ladders.

NOTICE: New York City Local Law 196 (LL196) of 2017 specifies that, as part of the course requirements for 8-Hour Fall Prevention, trainees demonstrate wearing generic fall protection equipment.
